Interview with Arnel Artus, Visual Arts Instructor for Loveland Creates

Artus, A. Private collection.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into art?
Arnel Artus: I actually graduated with a business degree and was working in sales. I started taking art seriously at the age of 35, after moving to the U.S. I dabbled a little in art when I was younger, but it was really my wife who encouraged me to pursue it again. I’m mostly self-taught, though I’ve been fortunate to have mentors along the way.

Q: What does art mean to you personally?
Arnel Artus: For me, it’s my way of giving back to the community with these “borrowed” skills. I never expected or planned for this path, it’s something that was planned for me long before I realized it. I’ve been blessed to work with different churches and organizations, and now, with Loveland Creates.

Q: What mediums do you work with?
Arnel Artus: It depends on the project. For commission work like portraits, pets, or landscapes, I usually use oil on canvas. Acrylic or latex is my second choice. When teaching or doing short-term projects like murals or smaller pieces, I prefer safe, non-toxic, water-based mediums that are easy to prep. I also enjoy working with watercolor, pastels, and charcoal.

Q: What are your goals when teaching at Loveland Creates?
Arnel Artus: My hope is to share the love and joy of being an artist while keeping participants productive, both physically and emotionally. I want them to feel supported and inspired to explore their creativity.

Q: How do you build connections with participants?
Arnel Artus: Connection starts with sincerity. When you build trust and friendship, that foundation allows participants to gain confidence, discover and develop their strengths. I also model this by sharing what they’re capable of and encouraging them along the way.

Q: Are there any upcoming projects you’re excited about?
Arnel Artus: Absolutely! I’m looking forward to working on sculpture and clay, creative resin projects, and portrait art using different tools on large canvases. It’s always exciting to explore new mediums with participants.

Q: Who or what influences your work?
Arnel Artus: I draw a lot of inspiration from masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Dali. I also find influence in the world around me, it’s everywhere if you look closely.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring artists?
Arnel Artus: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and fail. Learn, correct, and keep going. Stay positive, even when surrounded by challenges, and never give up. That mindset will take you far.

Q: Looking ahead, what are your hopes for your work at Loveland Creates?
Arnel Artus: I hope to create bigger projects on large canvases, keep our participants happy every day, and see more artwork on the walls—art made by our participants. Seeing them grow and express themselves is the greatest reward.
